What is Pilates?

After years of neck and low back pain, I finally found something that cured the pain and helped me do everything in my life easier, better, and with more joy! This included: sitting at a computer, going out with my fiends, taking walks through the woods, dancing at weddings, playing golf and tennis, etc. I want to share this amazing form of exercise with everyone – no matter what age, fitness level or ability!

Pilates is the BEST way to incorporate your full BODY and MIND. In short, it helps you MOVE BETTER – which in turn helps you LIVE BETTER. What you practice in an hour long session will translate into better posture, strength, flexibility and overall ability to perform your everyday tasks and activities. It will get you on your way to a healthier lifestyle through MINDFUL movement.

Pilates is an innovative and safe system of mind-body exercise using a floor mat or a variety of equipment, such as the Reformer, Trapeze Table, Chair, Ladder Barrel, Spine Corrector, etc. We use the Reformer for a lot classes at Refresh. It evolved from the principles of Joseph Pilates and can dramatically transform the way your body looks, feels and performs. Pilates builds strength without excess bulk, capable of creating a sleek, toned body with slender thighs and a flat abdomen. (Yeah, we know – who doesn’t want that?)

It is a safe, sensible exercise system that will help you look and feel your very best. It teaches body awareness, good posture and easy, graceful movement. Pilates also improves flexibility, agility and economy of motion. It can even help alleviate a wide varieties of aches and pains (This is why we use it with our physical therapy patients as well!)

No matter what your age or condition, it will work for you, but don’t just take our word for it. According to the SGMA, in the U.S. alone nearly nine million people participated in Pilates in 2009 – a staggering 456% increase from 2000.

There’s no way around it. I highly recommend that you at least try one. They’re a great way to get started (try the new client 3-pack) or for seasoned veterans who really want to hone their skills and perfect their form. It is also good if you are experiencing pain or have any restrictions. All group class exercises can be modified, and during a private session is a great way to learn those modifications!
