What is Pelvic Floor Therapy?
Let’s start off with a bit of background. What is the Pelvic Floor? The Pelvic Floor is the group of muscles that support your reproductive and urinary tract along with aided support from the hips, low back, and abdominal muscles. Together these muscle groups help to form a cohesive unit that support the pelvic floor muscles and organs.
- Bladder + bowel issues
- Pain with intercourse
- Musculoskeletal aches (hip, low back, SI joint, groin, and abdomen)
- Pregnancy + postpartum recovery
- Post-operative pelvic or abdominal care
What to Expect Your First Visit
Your first appointment typically consists of a discussion with your therapist about past experiences, medical history, lifestyle, and other contributing factors. Your initial exam will consist of an evaluation of posture, back alignment, and hip alignment to check on the accessory muscles of the pelvic floor. This evaluation may also include an internal or external musculature exam, depending on your level of comfort. By completing this exam, we can determine what factors may be contributing to your pelvic floor discomfort to better help us treat you.
Treatment plans, goals, and timelines differ person by person, but our trained team will come up with the best plan to get you to where you need to be. This might include:
- Manual Therapy
- Personalized Pelvic floor home exercise program
- Stretching + strength-building exercises
- Breathing techniques for mindfulness
Your pelvic floor treatment is customized for you and your needs. We want to help you understand your symptoms and pains and the best way to treat them. Reach out to us to set up your appointment today.
